Ballast Point is opening in Fulton Market on May 15th, 2018. Originally from San Diego, the craft beer crew of the West Coast have created a recognizable identity nationwide, and will have a taproom with kitchen in the already booming Fulton Market strip. Located right off Lake, at 212 N. Green St., Ballast Point is the perfect addition to the diverse dining and drinking options that are already available in Fulton Market.

I had the opportunity to attend the private launch party on May 10th, 2018. It was a packed crowd led by Ballast Point President Marty Birkel, who welcomed all the attendees to sample the wide array of brews and bites. Though I am a huge barrel-age fan, my favorite beer of the evening was the award-winning Manta Ray Double IPA. It paired well with some of the bites being passed around, which included; BBQ Pork sliders, ceviche, and mussels with chorizo. Check out their beer below – everything on tap!

Along with your usual suspects of food journalists and influencers, on hand were three Chicago sports icons. Retired Cubs first baseman, Derrek Lee, former Blackhawk Adam Burish, and current Chicago Fire Captain Dax McCarty, were all hanging out and enjoying brews while taking pictures and talking sports, beer and food. After the festivities, Derrek Lee dined at Steak 48.

Fulton Market was in dire need of a brewery and Ballast Point answered the call. This is a perfect fit for the neighborhood, and if the launch party is any indication of what’s to come after the brewery opens to the public on 5/15/18, then it is definitely something worth checking out. The taproom is huge and circles around the actual bar, while the west side of the space is mostly retail merchandise. There are plans for the rooftop space to open soon, as well as a little surprise that I cannot disclose at this time.
